Rock Stars, Up Close

by Shona Husk

Something amazing happened last week. I usually win my money back on a scratchy, but I don’t win big. So when @TweetPerth ran a competition to win tickets and a meet and greet with Def Leppard, I retweeted without holding my breath.

When I was told I’d won, I was astounded.

I texted hubby—apparently his work colleagues had never seen him so excited. Hubby is just a bit of a Def Leppard fan.

After a mad dash for babysitting, hubby and I trekked off to Red Hill Amphitheatre (I have no idea how we would have found the venue pre-smart phone days).

Red Hill

We had to be there super early for the meet and greet, so we got the bonus of seeing all the sound checks.

Live (yay!) and Baby Animals (also yay!) were the support acts. I may have let out a whoop at the end of Live’s sound check song and I got a fist pump in return.

Live

The venue was really nice and serene as we and the other lucky few had the venue to ourselves, then we watched the gates open, and I swear it was like the zombie apocalypse as people rushed in to get a good spot near the stage. Being there super early we had that sorted.

Baby Animals and Live were great. I loved Baby Animals when I was in high school and hadn’t seen Live in years, so I was pretty excited to be there.

Def Leppard were awesome—I was surprised how many words I remembered. Can’t remember what I did last week, songs from 20 years ago, no worries….

But what about the meet and greet you ask?

Well that is an interesting story.

The meet and greet was before the concert and we all lined up (at a rough guess about 40 of us, including 9 competition winners). The competition winners were quickly culled from the herd and moved to the back. Why? So we didn’t accidentally get given a VIP tote bag with exclusive Def Leppard VIP merchandise (autographed photo, drum sticks and guitar picks), and a commemorative Def Leppard VIP laminate & lanyard. When someone asked why we weren’t getting the gift, the straight up answer from the host was because we hadn’t paid for the ticket. As you can imagine there was grumblings about being second class citizens and not being worthy.

Although it was disappointing to be treated differently, meeting the band was still super exciting (hubby can cross that off his bucket list). They were charming and we got a picture taken with them. I’m sure they didn’t know a competition winner from a paying fan. And after talking with the other winners, most of them were fans who couldn’t afford the price of the meet and greet.

Here’s the sad part. Afterward as we all grabbed a drink and our good spot close to the stage, you know what the winners were talking about—how they hadn’t received the gift bag and had no memento of the meet and greet except the photo with the band.

That was a lesson in public relations. You don’t want your fans talking like that. You want them hyped about meeting the band and talking about how awesome it was. And it was awesome, one of things that hubby and I could have never done if not for the win. It would have left a sweeter taste if they had poured the same sugar on the winners (too much of a pun?) You all smiled. I know you did 😉

So a big thank you to @TweetPerthfor the tickets!

For Baby Animals for opening a rocking night.

Live for being awesome—and the new singer, Chris Shinn who was super friendly with the crowd.

Def Leppard for taking to time to meet the fans before the show and for rounding out a great night out.

Real rock stars are awesome – but fictional rock bands need your love too. For some fantastic Australian rock stories, check out Shona’s Face the Music series. The series kicks off with Out of Rhythm.

Freo – a rockin’ town

by Shona Husk

Welcome to Freo!

Aerial_view_of_FremantleI’ve lived in Western Australia for 19 years. I moved with my hubby when he got posted to HMAS Stirling for his submarine training (a few months later he got posted back to Sydney on a training billet and I was left in WA…but that is a different story).

While I have worked in a lot of different offices around Perth, one of my favourite places to work was Fremantle. This was back in the days when there was Angus and Robertson AND Dymocks in the same mall, and I worked above the library. Sounds like heaven already? Then there was the Italian ice-creamery…

You know how I spent my lunch breaks, don’t you?

When not eating ice cream and browsing for books there was the new age shops, boutiques with funky shoes, pizza places and there may have been the occasional Friday drafting meeting (I was a civil designer) held at the pub over the road (nachos and bourbon!).

Fremantle has a certain vibe. It’s fun and friendly and there’s always something to see.

Fremantle (home of the Dockers for the football fans) is also known for nurturing its local musos.

There are pubs to play in, small venues galore. The Fly by Night has launched many an album (the old location was a real character building). Then there is the haunted Fremantle Arts Centre where lights and amps have been known to play up.

When choosing where the place my up and coming band, Selling the Sun, Fremantle was the place to be. Maybe they’ll outgrow it and move to L.A. when they get big…or maybe they’ll stay close to home. At the moment they are trying to get their second album written and working out where the rent is going to come from.

Coming off a successful Australian tour and prestigious industry award nominations, Gemma Field’s life should be perfect. Instead her parents want her to get a real job, the second album isn’t coming together, and her best friend, Kirsten wants nothing to do with her.

Falling for her best friend was never going to make life easy. After an almost accidental drunken kiss almost six months ago, they aren’t even talking. Gemma can’t even talk about it with anyone – not her family, not her bandmates, not even the one person she used to share everything with. Instead she lives in a space of indecision and pain, and it’s affecting all aspects of her life, including the band.

Kirsten Vincent missed Gemma like crazy, but did she miss her as a friend or as something more? She’s confused and Gemma is hurt, and the consequences of a bad decision will affect more than their personal lives. Will another kiss, a sober kiss, a kiss with intent, do more damage, or could it be the start of something more?

23732Every band is desperate for that first big break – but what happens after that?

Ed Vincent, front man of Selling the Sun, has a really bad case of second album jitters. Nothing he writes measures up to the expectations placed on him after the success of the first album. The tensions between band members are rising and everything seems to be falling apart just as they get started. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be: not every band gets to write their name on the pages of history. But the band has always been Ed’s dream, and if Ed gives up, will he have any dreams left?

Chasing dreams is something that other people do. Olivia Doyle put her life on hold after a car accident killed her fiancé and nearly claimed her life. Now with a three-year-old son and a part-time job, she knows she is stuck in a rut, but has no idea how to climb out. Then she meets Ed.

He can’t have the distraction of a relationship, and she has no time for anything casual. On the surface, they’re in completely different places, but love has a way of finding middle ground.

The Making of ‘Out of Rhythm’ – Rock Stars Done Differently

by Shona Husk

The story behind Out of Rhythm started in 2013…yep 2 years ago. I love rock star romance but two things stuck out at me.

  1. It was only guys having all the fun (Since 2013 I have discovered a few other female rock stars).
  2. They were already successful millionaires.

To me that seemed to be missing a prime opportunity for angst (mmm love me some angsty romance) and drama and tension and struggles—all the good stuff. So as a challenge between other projects (I do this quite a bit as I like to play with ideas without the pressure of due dates and it’s fun to just write) I decided to write a female wanna-be rockstar, and because I was feeling extra adventurous that day I thought it would be a good idea to write my first lesbian love story.

As with any experimental piece, there were teething problems (it was also my first contemporary romance) and then I got busy with other works and Out of Rhythm languished on my laptop…but it didn’t leave me alone. I knew it was there and I knew what I needed to do to fix it. I just didn’t know what to do with it when I did fix it. So I let it sit a bit longer…

Last year I had a huge gut instinct to fix it NOW and send it to Escape. I have learned not to ignore those feelings. I changed the character names (maybe that’s just me, but it helps me get fresh perspective if I have to do big fixes). There was also a title change at the last minute (I was about to hit send and I decided that I’d change the title).

I’m glad I didn’t ignore that feeling as I am delighted that Gemma, Ed, Mike and Dan each get a story – hopefully they will also make it big, not get too drunk after the shows (you’ve got to keep your eye on Mike), find love, not screw up aforementioned love (not naming names…but it begins with D).

Book 2, Out of Place, is out May 8th so there isn’t long to wait before the next instalment which is Ed’s story 🙂 8th so there isn’t long to wait before the next instalment which is Ed’s story 🙂
