Fantastic Four Years

Four years ago, Escape launched with a gala party on the beautiful Sydney Harbour, attended by authors, readers, booksellers, friends, and family.

Since that time, our family has grown exponentially, and we’re so proud to have more than 100 Escape Artists writing across 14 subgenres, but all adhering to that so important happy-ever-after ending.

To celebrate, I revisited the five books that kicked it all off for us:

8215

A romance about changing the game, finding the truth, and fancy footwork.

Reviewers said:

“Their journey is a really sweet and romantic one with a lot of depth and a great supporting cast, too” – USA Today – Happily Ever After Blog

“Keeper. New auto-buy author. Need I say more?” – BookThingo

“There’s a lot of great stuff in the book about the female/male dynamic; about the double standard; and about men respecting women. I appreciated seeing that addressed in a contemporary romance.  To complete the role reversal, the mates ask Alex what her intentions are toward Dan.  Mostly I loved watching Dan and Alex truly fall for each other. No insta lust. No wondering why these two belong together. By the end of the book, you know.” – Dear Author

Ainslie has since written seven novels for Escape, as well as self-publishing. Her latest novel is Incapable

8212

A dark, violent, and devastatingly sensual erotic fantasy about the binding force of love.

Reviewers said:

“Erotic romance readers who are weary of porny positions and situations may find this book a refreshing change. Hill writes some hot scenes without trying to do to much. The focus is always on Lissa and Devadas rather than which body parts are participating in the action.” – Bookthingo

“The chain harness was a nice erotic touch, but one of the things that stood out for me was how much I liked Lissa. She grew and matured and changed quite a bit, rising to a new challenge and coming to realise that, much like in a democratic system, a leader is nothing without healthy, happy people to lead…” – Giraffe Days

“I love this sort of story and it was great in novella form.” – Sahara Hoshi

Keziah Hill also writes as DB Tait and has been focused on her crime novels since Escape’s launch.

8211

A fresh and exciting debut novel introducing the Chronicles from the Applecross.

Reviewers said:

“Fast-paced and imaginative I really enjoyed this novel, I am already looking forward to the next installment and I urge fans of the paranormal fantasy genre to give Chaos Born a try.” – Book’d Out

Chaos Born was one of those books that, when finished, I was really happy I found it and read it.” – Vampire Book Club

“A fast-paced, well-written urban fantasy with a flawed but charming heroine. There isn’t much romance in this book, but if you like a lot of action and aren’t put off by a high body count—usually by decapitation—then it’s a promising start to a new series.” – BookThingo

Rebekah has rounded off the Chronicles of the Applecross series, and started a new series about Werewolf Bikers in Tasmania. She also has a YA novel, Threader, out with Harlequin Teen.

8214

This Christmas, Santa is granting wishes these two friends never knew they had.

Reviewers said:

A quick Christmas read that pushes all the right buttons and won’t leave you looking puffy and red-eyed on the train.” – BookThingo

“Talli and Dean are fun characters with plenty of chemistry and I enjoyed how the sexual tension amplified throughout their day working together.” – Australian Bookshelf

“This one made me laugh out loud and sigh with happiness.” – The Smutty Kitty

Rhian has published several holiday themed romances with Escape, as well as participating in two Escape continuity series and pursuing other publishing opportunities.

8213

She thinks she needs him, but she doesn’t know the secrets he keeps…

Reviewers said:

“This is a fabulous debut novel, expertly thought out and skilfully written with a passionate pair of main characters that both have hidden depths.” – 1 Girl 2 Many Books

“This is a great suspense romance with intelligent characters.” – Novels On The Run

“A seamless read and as close to a keeper as I’ve got with romantic suspense in the last few years.” – BookThingo

Lee Christine published two more Grace & Poole books, and has kicked off a new romantic suspense series, Dangerous Arrangements.

#SydneyWives – Captivating Christa

(reblogged from AusRomToday – check out their awesome coverage: reviews, spotlights, competitions, and more!)

Tell us a little more about your housewife, Christa:
She’s quite a complex character. Cool, calm and collected on the outside but a wildness that needs to come out in the bedroom. She’s also a little vulnerable in unexpected ways.

What inspired Christa’s story:
The brief from Escape and a need to make Christa more than she seems. I wanted to play with some assumptions that people make about rich society women.

What was your biggest challenge in writing Christa’s story?
Choreography. A threesome can be quite challenging in that way. Also, I’ve never written something that was set up with connected characters. That was interesting!

Why will we love Christa?
She feels deeply not just about those she loves but about those who suffer. And she goes after what she wants no matter how unconventional it may seem.

The Housewives of Sydney series promises that we’ll “find out what goes on behind the doors of the most exclusive addresses in the country”. What was the appeal of joining this series? Similarly, what has been the biggest challenge?
The appeal was working with an amazing group of women and brainstorming ideas about character traits, houses, clothes etc. The biggest challenge was allowing myself to take a risk and see what emerged. It was a great experience!

SLAH_Christa_FinalFrom the hottest writers in Australia comes a scintillating new series. Enter the world of Sydney’s elite, and find out what goes on behind the doors of the most exclusive addresses in the country…

Meet the Housewives of Sydney. They are wealthy, elegant, poised, and constantly in the public eye. But what goes on behind closed doors, in the private homes and parties where the cameras and paparazzi aren’t welcome? Delve into the most personal details of their relationships, their friendships and their lives. The only question is: can you handle the heat?

In business, as in pleasure, Christa has two rules: ask for what you want, and be prepared to get a bit creative. She and her husband, Marc, are infamous for their charitable soirees and the obscene amount of money that they raise for good causes around the world.

The secret to their success has always been well-kept, but one chance encounter with Christa is going to lead one lucky CEO to find out just how this unorthodox pair make friends and influence people.

Secret Confessions: Christa – Exclusive Excerpt!

SLAH_Christa_Final“You could still come to the cocktail party tomorrow, if you want to. It’s very relaxed. We want people to have a good time too. Sure, I’ll hit you for some money, but the experience doesn’t have to be unpleasant.”

Christa couldn’t help a quick glance at the creamy skin of Elizabeth’s neck and cleavage and smiled to herself at the button that pulled, just a little, between the other woman’s round, firm breasts. She could see, very faintly, the outline of her nipples. She shifted her gaze to Elizabeth’s face and thought she saw something glint in her eyes. Some interest that wasn’t just philanthropic.

Well, well. Marc and she hadn’t played with a woman in a while.

But maybe she was wrong. Maybe she just wanted Elizabeth to show some interest in her because Christa’s panties were getting more and more damp at the thought of the Nordic Goddess in her bed. More to the point, in her and Marc’s bed. With Marc watching.

Her pulse kicked up.

Elizabeth smiled at her. “When you put it like that, I’ll have to come.”

Effie bustled out of the back room with Marc’s suit and what looked like a cocktail dress for Elizabeth. “I thought that was you, Ms Underwood. Here’s your dress. So beautiful.”

Christa saw a midnight blue sparkly dress under the dry cleaner’s plastic.

“Come to the cocktail party and wear that,” she said impulsively, making it sound like a demand. Her nipples pebbled at the quick glance and wry smile Elizabeth turned on her.

“I’d love to,” she said.

“Good.”

The two women professed their eternal gratitude to Effie and walked out together in the same direction.

“How are you finding Sydney?” Christa asked. “You’re from the US, aren’t you?”

Elizabeth nodded. “Originally from the mid-west, but the last ten years in Brussels, then New York. I love Sydney. It feels like I’ve come home. All that water. My parched midwest soul is very happy here.” She pushed back the strand of hair falling across her face, which loosened more strands. It suited her, making her look like a dishevelled Mistress of the Universe.

They both turned down an alleyway at the back of the row of shops. It was deserted and dark.

“Here’s my car,” Elizabeth said, stopping near a silver Mercedes roadster.

“Mine’s further up the laneway,” Christa said. She had to find out if what she was picking up from Elizabeth was real or just a fantasy. A very compelling fantasy. She stepped closer to the other woman and lifted her hand to Elizabeth’s neck.

“That’s a very beautiful pendant,” she said, brushing her fingers against Elizabeth’s skin to hold the diamond in the palm of her hand.

“Thank you,” Elizabeth said, her voice a little breathless and high. “My ex-husband gave it to me.”

“Ex?”

She nodded, as Christa stood mesmerised by her blue crystalline eyes.

“Two years now. Very amicable.”

“And there’s no current Mr Underwood?”

Elizabeth smiled and tilted her head to one side. “No,” she said, making the word sound like an invitation.

Christa released the pendant and let her fingers slide down the soft silk of Elizabeth’s shirt, brushing her covered nipple as she went. She held her hand just under the curve of Elizabeth’s breast and stepped closer so her lips were almost level with the other woman’s mouth.

“What about a current Ms Underwood?” she whispered.

Elizabeth shook her head, smiling even more widely.

“Good,” Christa said. “Very good.”

“You’re a bad girl, aren’t you?” Elizabeth murmured, her mouth brushing the corner of Christa’s mouth.

“You have no idea,” Christa said, scraping her fingernail over Elizabeth’s silk-covered nipple.

Escape Publishing has launched!

It’s here, it’s here, it’s finally here!

I know we’ve been talking up Escape Publishing for what seems like months (okay, it has been months), but for all the time that you’ve been waiting, we’ve been waiting longer. So I can’t begin to tell you the (admittedly, somewhat stress-driven) happy dance that we’re all doing now that launch day has finally arrived.

November 14th:

  • the BBC starts broadcasting in the UK (1922)
  • Theodore Maiman invents the first laser (1967)
  • Condoleeza Rice is born (1954)
  • Booker T Washington dies (1915)
  • I finally get to tell you about Escape’s fabulous launch titles (2012)

You can find blurbs about all of the different books on our website, but I thought I might tell you a little bit about why I chose each of these titles to help launch Escape Publishing!

Chains of Revenge

Chains of Revenge by Keziah Hill

Chains of Revenge – Keziah Hill

One of the things romance writers have to be very careful to resolve is any power vacuum between their characters – even if outwardly one of the characters occupies a more powerful position, it must be clear to the reader that, within the relationship at least, the characters meet as equals. What I loved about Keziah’s erotic novella is how she played with this – at different times in the story, both characters occupy a position of complete authority, but their emotions and reactions to each other always, always make them equal, proving that the power of love is stronger than chains.

Also? This story is hot.

Chaos Born by Rebekah Turner

Chaos Born by Rebekah Turner

Chaos Born by Rebekah Turner

So in my past life as a reviewer, I was given a lot of urban fantasy, which makes sense, ’cause urban fantasy sells, especially if the author has managed to ride the crest of whichever monster is trending at the moment. But I gotta admit, after a while, it seemed much of a muchness to me.

Then, in breezes Rebekah Turner, with her complex world, her shades-of-grey characters, her loveable-but-would-hate-to-be-called-that heroine, and I was stuck. What I really love best about Rebekah’s book is that she ignores the whole ‘hero must stand apart from his/her community’ thing, and makes Lora have to deal with, negotiate and navigate the world she lives in. Sure, she breaks rules occasionally – well, okay, a lot – but there are consequences. Lora lives in her world, and thus the world cannot be ignored. I also thought the ‘villains’ (but are they?) – the militant religious order that keeps peace (and control) on the streets were fascinating.

Christmas Wishes by Rhian Cahill

Christmas Wishes by Rhian Cahill

Christmas Wishes by Rhian Cahill

I admit, I am a total sucker for friends to lovers stories, especially when its best friends, and there’s that whole emotional gamut of ‘what if we ruin what we have?’ risk, while still yearning desperately for something more. What really caught me about Rhian’s story, however, is the playfulness. Sure the characters angst a bit, but their relationship is so warm, so friendly, so teasing, that I found myself smiling all the way through – and then giving a big ol’ sigh at the end.

Grease Monkey Jive by Ainslie Paton

Grease Monkey Jive
by Ainslie Paton

Grease Monkey Jive by Ainslie Paton

I love big stories. Love them. Give me a long arc, multiple secondary characters, and slow builds any day. So I just fell all over myself when I read this novel from debut author Ainslie, with its long timeline, its space to breathe, its host of fantastic supporting characters, its community and its family. Plus, Pimp My Ride meets Strictly Ballroom! This one reminded me strongly of early Susan Elizabeth Phillips, but without the 80s fashion. Grease Monkey Jive is all about relationships that don’t happen in a vacuum, and reminding us that best friends will have a lot to say.

In Safe Hands by Lee Christine

In Safe Hands by Lee Christine

What I liked best about Lee’s very polished romantic suspense story was how very contemporary it felt – like it was something that could happen to any one of us at any time, thanks to the pervasiveness of technology. It made the whole scenario so much more suspenseful, and really brings the reader alongside Allegra – the heroine – immediately. Plus, ex-SAS hero? Yes, please!

There are a number of ways for you to check out our launch titles, and now’s the time to do it – we’ve got special launch pricing at the moment, and all stories are available for $0.99!

These prices aren’t going to last long, though, so get in quick – and please, tell me what you think! I’d love to know what you felt, how you went, and if you agree with my assessments. We’ve been working towards this launch for months, and I can’t express how excited we are to finally get to set Escape Publishing loose in the world!
