Hallowe’en Series: Cathleen Ross’s Special Permission

by Cathleen Ross

Once a year, I go on tour with the eminent historical writer Alison Weir. A few years ago we visited Twekesbury Abbey, where the guide for our party said he and his daughter often saw ghosts in the Abbey, notably one who occupied the pulpit preaching.

Although Alison’s tours are fast paced, we are allowed free time to explore the Abbey. I’m psychic and although I normally keep my senses reigned in, I relax on vacation and decided to sit at the back of the Abbey and open my third eye.

It didn’t take long when I heard a spectral male voice say, “You do not have jurisdiction here.”

I couldn’t see who was speaking. Sometimes I get an image, sometimes not. I did however recognise the voice of authority. I humbly explained I was a visitor and could I see back into the past to what happened in the abbey after the Battle of Twekesbury  where many soldiers from the losing Lancastrian Army fled to take sanctuary.

An image came to me where bodies were piled in the back of the Abbey and the floors were awash with blood, so much so that that it flowed like a small wave across the floor under my feet.

I thanked the ghostly custodian of the Abbey, closed down my third eye and decided to leave.

When I asked Alison about what I’d seen, she said the voice had been using Canon Law. I now know that means law as pertaining to the church. The ghostly custodian had allowed me permission to see into his realm.

So much violence had been done in the Abbey 4 May 1471, and it was clear to me that the ghosts still remain.

The world’s gone to hell, and her only chance of survival is the sexy, dominant soldier determined to keep her safe…

Doctor Ruth Parker has always taken care of herself, and that’s what she’s doing now, hiding out in her apartment and avoiding her neighbours: once privileged Mosman residents, now flesh-eating braindeads, thanks to the virus that’s turned her world—and everyone else’s—to hell.

Captain Jack Lang has always taken care of others, and with the newly secured Base he and his loyal commandos control the only safe place in the city. But the Base has needs that he can’t meet—doctors. And women. So when he discovers Ruth and her two friends in an unsafe apartment, he brings them back to Base where he knows he can keep them safe, and where he will do anything to make them stay.

Ruth is used to giving orders, not taking them, and the Captain’s methods for making sure she stays put don’t gel with her fierce independent streak. But the world has changed, and Jack will make Ruth understand that he is in charge and that her survival is more important than her control-freak tendencies—even if he has to chain her to the bed to do it.

ARRA Wins! Woooo!

So, when it comes to the Australian Romance Readers Awards, Escape has been feeling a bit like pre-2016-Oscars Leonardo DiCaprio. We had respect, sure! And lots (58!) of nominations! But no matter how many supermodels we partied with (OK, Down & Dusty cover models) (in our heads), we hadn’t won an ARRA.

Well I’m pleased to announce that as of last night’s ARRA awards dinner, we’re feeling a bit like smug post-Oscars Leo.

Forced Proximity: zombie apocalypse edition

In the last ‘forced proximity’ post in our series about romance tropes, Cathleen Ross explains how she used the trope in her novel Base.

Forced Proximity. Hmm, I hear you say. Is that one of those steamy politically incorrect romances? Probably, but romance readers love their tropes and this is a favourite, usually because the sexual tension is always steamy in this kind of romance.

What happens when you force two people together who don’t like each other?

In my novel Base, the world’s gone to hell thanks to a virus that turns people into flesh-eating zombies. My hero, Captain Jack Lang, is in charge of the military base, one of the few fenced-off compounds in Sydney’s exclusive Mosman. With the sea and cliffs on one side, he and his commandos are trying to regain territory and save lives. The trouble is the first live woman he finds thinks she’d be safer on her yacht, not with him.

Doctor Ruth Parker is used to giving orders, not taking them, but she doesn’t have the survival skills she needs in the new world. The Base needs doctors, and women. Locking Ruth up as his prisoner is only going to work for so long and Jack has to convince Ruth and her two girlfriends to stay.

heatI loved mixing two strong personalities and adding a dose of fear, hunger and sensuality. Captain Lang has a need to save the world and he’s great with his men who are used to obeying orders. He can reward his commandos with alcohol and a great gun anytime, but his seduction skills with women are lacking. If Ruth got hold of a gun she’d probably shoot him but locking her up isn’t the answer.  She’s not even impressed with his display of firepower, ability to slay zombies or his super-sexy hot body, which he’d willingly let her use. It takes showing Ruth his vulnerable side, his loneliness and his appreciation of her skills that eventually wins her heart.

For those interested in a taste of an extended scene from Base, my novella Heat can be downloaded here.

#SydneyWives – Naughty Nella

(reblogged from AusRomToday, where J’aimee is running an amazing competition!)

Tell us a little more about your housewife, Nella:
My housewife, Nella is wealthy Mosman old school. She’s very committed to her charity of finding accommodation for children in danger. She beautiful, confident and happily married to a billionaire however, she does have a very dirty secret.

What inspired Nella ‘s story:
Blame Tracey O’Hara. She’s the editor for this project. She called me and said, “You’d be good at writing a Domme. That’s what you do.” I do? Huh? “Okay,” I said.

What was your biggest challenge in writing Nella ‘s story?
Let me tell you, this was the hardest story I’ve ever written in my whole life. I found it really difficult to get into the persona. My daughter tells me I can’t write a Domme because I’m the Omega of the family. Even the dog bosses me around.  Poor Tracey had to check my story and get out the kinks and explain how Dommes function. even though Tracey isn’t one. Actually it was the blind leaving the blind. So when I submitted this story I was very relieved when Escape editor Kate Cuthbert said she enjoyed it.

Why will we love Nella?
Nella has a big heart and she’s very creative at coming up with new ways of humbling the love of her life, Michael and extracting his money for her charity. Actually, I admire her. I could take some lessons from her so that my own status rises above the dog in my family.

The Housewives of Sydney series promises that we’ll “find out what goes on behind the doors of the most exclusive addresses in the country”. What was the appeal of joining this series? Similarly, what has been the biggest challenge?
I read through all the stories and loved them. The challenge of doing a series is to catch the essence of the other characters when including them in your scene. This is a very talented group of authors who push the limits in terms of what they can do and it’s fun being part of that. They caught the scenarios and characters well. It’s going to be a successful series and reveal some very dirty secrets.

#SydneyWives – Exclusive Excerpt: Nella

22818Nella Pouache, wealthy Mosman socialite, committed Catholic and control freak, strode up and down with Monty, her Moodle, on her heels. When she looked at her Cartier watch, she saw it was one minute past seven. Dinner would be spoiled. Nothing annoyed her more than lateness, even from Michael; especially from Michael. After twenty-seven years of marriage to her billionaire husband, she was used to a certain routine. She pivoted on her black stilettos and adjusted her leather eyelet corset, which she’d had made especially to her dimensions.

Monty whined and tried to leap up, but Nella stepped aside so her sheer stockings
wouldn’t be ruined. She had a date with her husband and she was keen to get going. After
all, she’d spent a fortune on her especially tailored outfit. She bent and patted Monty.
“Sorry, darling. I know you’re hungry.” She paused as she heard the sound of the garage
door open and the throaty hum of Michael’s BMW. “About time.”

Michael Pouache slid off his jacket then undid his tie, flinging them on a chair as he
strode through the door that connected the garage to the television room of his mansion on prestigious Bradley’s Head Road, Mosman. “I’m home, my love.”

It didn’t matter that they’d been married for years, just the sight of her handsome,
commanding husband made her heart patter when he came into the lounge room. Nella
raised her eyebrows, well, she would have except the Botox she’d had injected into her
forehead four days ago had started to work. “You’re late. It’s time you were taught a
lesson.”
